Norma Desmond* was right. The pictures have gotten small. Sure, there are still Hollywood blockbusters every summer and Oscar-bait serious films brought out in the fall, only now, instead of lining up to see them at the theater, you can watch them on your laptop, your kindle, or even your phone.
Cinekong isn’t here to debate whether that’s good or bad; it’s just a fact of cinematic life these days. But with more options on how to watch a film, fans are now faced with an absolute deluge of movies to choose from, often through computer-generated lists that have no real rhyme or reason. Movies that are 20 years old get presented as “New Releases.” You’ll find films that never made it into theaters promoted as “Blockbusters.” Graphic Horror movies are under the Comedy banner, and slapstick Comedies are under Action.
Separating the really good from the really bad
With all these different kinds of movies being shoved at you, how do you separate the really good from the really bad, the actual classics from the total crap? It’s not as easy as it seems, because what one cinephile proclaims to be a great film may cause other viewers to throw their chosen viewing device against the wall in frustration.
