Escape

Escape embodies relentless energy. The protagonist, Kyu-nam, is a senior sergeant nearing the end of his ten-year service in a North Korean frontline unit near the DMZ. Faced with a future where he cannot choose his own path, he dreams of escaping south. His reason for defecting is simple yet compelling: “At least I’ll have the freedom to try and fail at what I want to do.

Kyu-nam’s desire to go south isn’t driven by ideological or systemic beliefs that the South is a utopia; it’s a desperate, straightforward wish to move from a place that feels devoid of a future to one that seems to promise one.
