More Than Jaws Turns 50

Like thousands of other fans, I made sure to watch Jaws as the film celebrated its 50th anniversary in the public consciousness. More than 67 million people in the U.S. went to see Jaws when it was initially released in 1975 (just under a third of the country’s total population at the time), making it the first summer “blockbuster.” It deserved the attention.

But there were other movies released in 1975. IMDb.com lists 379 coming out between January and December. Some of them are not only memorable, but still very watchable, like Rollerball or Dog Day Afternoon. Some, like Crazy Mama, Cornbread, Earl and Me, were fun at the drive-in, but not worth watching a second time. A lot of them – The Black Gestapo, The Other Side of the Mountain, Mahogany – should be forgotten.

While none of them ever came close to being the cultural phenomenon of Jaws, some of them still deserve your attention, whether it’s your first time watching them or your 100th. Here’s the Cinekong list of our favorite films celebrating their golden anniversaries, each of which, in its way, helped change the history of cinema. Or maybe just my opinion on what a movie can or should be. Rather than try to sell you on any of them, we’ll just give you the links and let you decide for yourself. Watch them, then send us your comments or personal recommendations for a watchable 50-year-old movie. We will share it all with readers.
